MUSIC AT LEAMINGTON HASTINGS            NEWSLETTER   MAY 2013

Dear Music Lover,

In 3 weeks time our season begins with the European Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra and a full and varied programme..

Saturday

May 25

7.30pm

Kammerphilharmonie Europa

A. Vivaldi - Concerto for Violin No.4 a minor RV
A. Ponchielli - Concerto in F Major, for trumpet and orchestra
J. S. Bach - Double Concerto For Two Violins In D Minor
A. Corelli - Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.4 in D Major
G. Faure - Pavane Op. 50
E. Grieg - Holberg-Suite Op.40

There are still seats available for this and all of the other concerts.

If you have children, or indeed grown-ups, that would like a gentle introduction to classical music, I would recommend the May 25th concert. The Matinee concert on June 9th, avoiding late bedtimes as it does, would also be a good opportunity for children to enjoy music, and tea and cakes at the interval.

The full programme for that and the rest of the season are shown below, along with a reminder of other local events.  I’ve also given a glimpse of what’s coming up in 2014 and 2015 at Leamington Hastings. A copy of this newsletter will be on our web site

Dear Concert-goer,

Music at Leamington Hastings

We are nearly at the end of our 2011 season, and I thought I’d take the opportunity to bring you up to date on a few subjects.

How has this Season gone?

We have tried to improve the marketing of the concerts by finding more places to place free advertising, and in co-operating with Leamington Music in advertising both of our events, This has been successful in a small way, mainly in the second part of the year. These e-mail newsletters also have had, I think, some beneficial effects.

Besides increasing sales revenue, we have also tried to reduce costs without reducing quality, which should be clear from all of the of concerts this year, where the feed-back has been very positive, in particular for the Cepicky, Rosefield, Dussek trio.Though not commonly well-known they turned out to be absolutely superb. Having picked them out, I should be also say  that they were but one highlight , including  a superb Yehudi Menuhin Concert, exceptional even for them, and a really barn-storming concert by the London Concertante, which if it did not exhaust the audience was certainly a sterling effort  for all the players. The first concert in May, too, gave us exceptional playing by Cedric Tiberghien, though unfortunately in front of our smallest audience for years. However, the audience size bounced-back in the next concert where Red Priest were again on superb form.

Overall, we have managed to have  a year with a very high level of  musical artistry, which will be capped-off by Ex Cathedra. From the financial point of view, our income will exceed our costs, a substantial improvement over 2010 and good news for the future viability of our concerts, I hope. Furthermore, this does not take into account Gift-aid tax relief which we expect to be returned to us from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

For a proportion of our income we do depend on the donations made by patrons, but we are fairly exceptional as a charity in that they are our only source of non-ticket fundng. We receive no publicly funded grants or subsidies. So, once again thank you all, patrons and non-patrons, for the support you give, and I hope you value what we offer in return

Of course, the concerts would be impossible without all of the many helpers who make things go so smoothly, and we should be very grateful indeed to them. I certainly am.

2012 Programme

We have not fixed the December date yet so 2 dates are shown. These are shown in the concert listings at the end of this newsletter

2013 Programme

Nothing is fixed, but it will almost certainly include the Yehudi Menuhin School, and I hope the St Petersburg Quartet.

The Leamington Society, have a talk next year:  with the title-

Music in Leamington Spa

Brief Details

“Richard Phillips lives in Warwick in the house in which he was born.  His musical experiences in Leamington go back to the 1950’s.  Concert series and festivals have dominated his life since the mid 1970’s and he has directed or organized some 96 festivals in all, most in the Midlands, but also in King’s Lynn, Norwich and Oundle.  His outstanding contribution to British Arts Festivals was acknowledged last year by winning the British Arts Festivals Association Award."

He will talk to the Leamington Society about music on Thursday February 8th 2012, in the Pump Room annexe starting at 7:30.   Admission £2, and everyone is welcome.  Wine and soft drinks are available in the interval.  There is plenty of parking nearby

AUGUST 2011 ON-LINE NEWSLETTER

Dear Concert-goer
I have great pleasure in sending you the August news-letter which includes news of our 2011 concerts, a preview of the 2102 season, and notices on behalf of other groups, including a notice for Rosamond Peirson's commemorative concert in the Temple Speech Rooms, Barby Rd, Rugby, on Sunday 4th September at 3.30pm.The Leamington Music programme and other extracts from their Newsletter are included at the end.

Mid Season Review
But first, a short snapshot of the first half of our season, which began with a superb piano recital by Cedric Tiberghien. We then had the usual bravura performance by Red Priest that attracted a number of families, which was very pleasing to see. The programme was very varied, with several of their own original arrangements, and, of course, highly enjoyable. For many, the next concert by the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra may have been the highlight not only of this year, but of many superb performances by this ensemble that we have heard over the years. The school itself  "felt it was one of the best we had done" and I also received a very kind thank you letter from Katherine Arnold, daughter of Sir Malcolm Arnold, who had come up from London to see the concert.
In summary, musically it was a very successful first-half of the year, though we could have hoped for larger audiences, so please do encourage your friends and acquaintances to come. However, we just about kept our head above water financially, and I would like to thank you all for supporting the concerts in this and previous years.
Thank you to Helpers and Patrons
As always, our helpers have  done a superb job, and I thank them all. I recently went to a music festival in Lincolnshire, and nearly always finding parking a problem, I thought, more than once that "this lot could do with Adrian Allen and his team of car-parking helpers".  As with all of our helpers, who provide the beautiful flower arrangements, erect and take down the stage, clear-up, feed the artists, provide interval refreshments, and generally pitch-in where needed, we are very lucky to have them.  The same applies to our patrons, who aside from the other assistance they may give, also help us to afford the artists we manage to engage, who are always of high quality
Gift Aid
We have finally (almost) concluded, with great care, the somewhat onerous documentation needed to claim gift-aid from the Inland Revenue. We have, over the past year or two, persuaded more and more people to sign-up as eligible for our gift-aid tax relief claims, and are now in a position to help claim what will be a substantial, and increasingly essential, supplement to the rest of our income.
Next Concert
Finally, I am looking forward to our next concert on Sept 10th, and to seeing some of you there to hear 3 wonderful piano trios played by the Cepicky, Rosefield and Dussek Trio.

JUNE 2011 ON-LINE NEWSLETTER

Dear Concert-goer,

I hope you don’t mind me sending out a  letter to  bring you up to date with things that are going on. I’m  sending this out only to those of you who have given an e-mail address, otherwise it would be too expensive, but nevertheless I thought reaching 300 readers would still be worthwhile. Our next concert is this Saturday, with Red Priest visiting us once again with "Pirates of the Baroque", a varied programme of baroque works with some virtuoso recorder playing from Piers Adams. More than the usual number of children are coming, which is what we want to see..

General State of affairs

First of all I thought I’d comment on how things were going, as this is my first season as chair of the trustees. The season began with a wonderful performance of a varied and difficult programme by Cedric Tiberghien. There were many highlights, but for me Debussy’s “Ile Joyeuse” was particularly satisfying. I also thought  his performance of Beethoven’s moonlight sonata was so fresh. The audience was few in number but highly appreciative, and we listened as the evening passed away to a beautiful encore of Debussy's  “La Cathedrale Engloutie” . We have some superb concerts to come and the Nave is practically sold out for Ex Cathedra, but with some rear, chancel and side seats still available. The Yehudi Menuhin School Concert bookings are also going quite well, though there is room for more in the nave. After the church refurbishment, there is more space in the south-east corner, and also we can move the pews to slant towards the stage, should we wish to. It was not needed in the last concert, but we may try it later.

Wine and other drinks for concerts

The concert helpers, of which there are many, held a wine tasting  hosted by me one evening before the season began to select affordable but good wines. The winning red is a Mouvedre/Syrah mix from South Africa sold by Waitrose and snapped up at a very good price. The white is a prize-winning Soave, from ASDA, and a real bargain. We also tried to pick a best orange juice (we thought Waitrose) and a good additional soft-drink - we picked sparkling elderflower made from Bottle Green cordial and Sainsbury's sparkling Caledonian Spring water.

If you are interested in the history of the church or the concerts there are several new items that are now added to the site.

Getting more people to Concerts

There is a virtuous circle of inviting the best artists, which brings the larger audiences, which generates more income which then allows us to invite the best artists. That has sustained us in the past, but for whatever reason adiences seem to be slowly diminishing in recent years. There are exceptions but by and large that is the trend.  So we need to reverse the trend , and one way is to reach a larger potential audience with our advertising. To that effect I have been discussing these problems with my opposite number in Leamington Music, Richard Phillips.  We have agreed to do two things. The first is to co-ordinate our programmes to avoid clashes.

The second is that Leamington Music shall help promote our concerts in their mailings, and we shall help promote theirs in ours. We both communicate with people whom we know are interested in classical music and so that should be a very effective form of advertising. We have already sold some Leamington Hastings tickets to people finding our brochure at a Leamington Music Concert in Snittertfield.

This is one of a number of areas of effort for us. Local papers and internet are also used, but not as effective as talking directly to music-lovers.
So, if you wish, you can  alsohelp by spreading our reputation for great music. .. talk to friends .. maybe pass on this email.Word of mouth is perhaps the best form of advertising.  Or if you are up to it, put it on your face-book page!!

Repertoire in our programmes

Its always difficult to be sure if we have this right. String quartet devotees may be disappointed at times. Many people might love more singing. Some might not. Should we go for established “names” or perhaps take risks on the “names” of the future ?  There are many questions to answer. However, this note is getting too long already and I'll address the subject later in the year

Next Season  2012

We shall, if all goes according to plan, have John Lill to begin the season,. The other concerts in the first half of the seaon being The Carducci Quartert together with Ashley Wass, in a concert including Francks Piano Quintet,  and 4 Girls 4 Harps who have appeared with us previously as the Barkham Quartet. I'm still trying to get things confirmed for the second half of 2012. Dates and Programmes will be confirmed in due course. (Though, general speaking Concerts are on the Saturday pre-ceding the second Sunday of the month).

Welcome to the 40th Season of

Music at Leamington Hastings

Dear Music Lover,

It gives me great pleasure that our concert series is now in its 40th year, and after our setback last year, we are back in All Saints Church Leamington Hastings, where the concerts were started by Ray Law all those years ago.

Since 2005 the team of people who bring the concerts to you  has been led by Peter  and Mary-Grace Ogilvie. They are taking a back seat now, and I would like to thank them for the tremendous efforts put in by them both, particularly so for last year, when a tremendous effort was needed to switch the concerts to a new location, and Peter “led the charge”. Not only that, we must thank them for hosting a wonderful summer evening of words and music at their home in the July concert.  From this year onward I am taking over from Peter and Mary-Grace, though I am glad to  know they will still be there to help and advise.

Now, looking ahead, the season begins on the 7th of May with a piano recital by Cédric Tiberghien. Cédric accompanied Alina Ibragimova in 2009, when his superb  musicianship was widely admired by the audience. This year he appears as a soloist in a pogramme of Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, and Ravel.

The rest of the annual programme, as you can see from the facing page, has been chosen to provide a varied programme of classical music.

The Patrons of Music at Leamington Hastings help us every year (around April) to choose the programme from a list of choices.  Patrons play an important role in guiding us in this manner, and their encouragement and support in other ways is valued greatly by all of us who work to organise the concerts.  I would also encourage anyone with a view on future programmes to let me know about it. My experience of the last year is that we are fortunate to have an audience who actually does feel involved and have sent many words of concern and encouragement. My sincere thanks to you all for that.

We must also applaud  the efforts of the PCC , chaired  by the Vicar, Jane Close, supported by Brian Cooke,  and all of the various parties they co-ordinated, to get the church ready by Christmas and our final concert of the year.

Finally, I would like to give special thanks to all of the people who have contributed so much to the smooth running and success of the concerts. By way of saying farewell, Mary-Grace and Peter, have added their note of thanks in the letter overleaf.

Best Wishes
